Bee pet teaching

The aim of the educational project The Secret Life of Bees is to give children the opportunity to get to know and better understand the wonderful world of bees, the fundamental role that this magnificent insect plays in nature by ensuring, through pollination, the evolutionary cycle of plants and the productive yield of agricultural crops, as well as the risks to which bees themselves are subjected as a result of pollution and chemical treatments to plants.

Introducing children to this fantastic insect means

  • bringing them closer to a naturally structured reality, a real society with precise rules and roles where each bee works for the good of the community;
  • helping them to overcome their fear of this "superorganism", which is crucial to the existence of the entire ecosystem.

The project is mainly aimed at primary school children, with different content and methodology depending on their age. However, the objectives will be agreed with the teachers and the project will be tailored to the educational needs. The workshop can be held in the relevant schools in the area in November, December, January, February and March.

The total duration is about 2 hours.

Activities

Using information technology:

  • quick presentation of the farm from a historical and geographical point of view;
  • description of the morphological structure and characteristics of bees. Explanation of their organisation, their behaviour and the gifts they offer us: wax (a material known since ancient times and with many uses), honey (the various types of honey, the flavours, the many ways of using it as food and for personal care), propolis, pollen and royal jelly (important natural elements for personal care, including pharmaceuticals);
  • reflections on the geometric shape of the hexagon.

Using a photographic teaching hive:

  • Explanation of the structure of a beehive and the life of bees inside it;
  • Knowledge of a beekeeper's equipment and his fundamental role in the survival of bees.

Each meeting is theoretical-practical and interactive.

Costs

The cost of the workshop is agreed upon following the presentation of teaching requirements.
